Fun at Math, Science and Technology Night!

Sorting: How many different ways can we group these stickers?

In a cafeteria filled with experiments and smart boards, Smith students and their families enjoyed an evening of exploration and fun!

Smith students worked alongside NC State University engineering and education students to explore science concepts hands-on:

  • Building paper windmills – to learn about “capturing” the wind and how wind energy can be converted to electricity
  • Measuring how many steps it takes them to walk a tape line, and then how many steps it takes their family and friends – to understand the importance of standard units for measuring
  • Sorting objects into groups with different characteristics (color, shape, subject, etc.) – to learn about ways scientists stay organized
  • Building structures from cardboard and rolls – to learn about how engineers test a structure’s strength and balance

Construction: If you build it, will it stand up?
