International Festival Celebrates Around the Globe!

The Smith ES family, through the vision and leadership of fifth grade teacher Heidi McQueen, hosted our first International Festival in June. Parents, families and friends volunteered their time to spend the day at Smith and make presentations to the school about their country.

The classes rotated from country to country and learned about the food, traditions, animals, languages, and other aspects of each country. Volunteers brought displays with examples of the clothing, music, art, sports, and culture of their country.

At each stop, the children received a flag sticker for their passports.

Students in Smith’s Geography Club and several IB students at Garner Magnet High School served as Ambassadors for each of the volunteers, helping them find the classroom for their presentation and setting up displays. Several students participated in the presentations with their families.

Students also rehearsed and presented dances to open each session of the Festival.
