Smith Magnet was proud to host one of the NC Science Olympiad Elementary school tournaments this spring, and a team of 15 Smith students in 3rd-5th grade participated!
Through fun activities and experiments, the day tested the knowledge and skills of elementary school scientists from across Wake and Durham Counties. Close to 500 students and volunteers participated.
The tournament ran from 8:30am-3:30pm and included 18 events developed by NC Master Elementary Teachers to align with the NC Standard Course of Study.
The topics ranged from building rockets, understanding basic circuitry, knowledge of marine and freshwater biomes, and demonstrating technical writing skills, to construction of paper airplanes designed for maximum time in the air and longest distance traveled, designing and testing a gravity-powered vehicle, and showing knowledge of scientific terms or concepts.
